Quartz: Properties and Crystal Diversity

Quartz is a mineral composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂), belonging to the trigonal crystal system. It has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and a density of approximately 2.65 g/cm³. It generally displays a vitreous lustre and forms six-sided crystals, often ending in pointed terminations. When colourless and transparent, it is known as rock crystal.

Quartz from Different Localities and Crystal Formations

The French Alps are home to several well-known quartz localities. La Gardette, in Isère, is particularly renowned for its quartz crystals. Our selection includes a bush-like quartz cluster from this locality, as well as specimens from Sigoyer in the Hautes-Alpes and Allos in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.

The Madan region of Bulgaria offers other examples of quartz crystallisation, including specimens associated with calcite or galena. Some specimens also display Japan-law twins, characterised by two crystals joined at a distinctive angle. Despite their name, these twins are not exclusive to Japan.

Quartz and Associated Minerals

Quartz is frequently found in association with other minerals. These combinations can produce very different appearances depending on the minerals present and the conditions under which the crystals formed.

Examples offered by Le Monde Minéral include quartz associated with pyrite from Morocco, quartz on galena from Bulgaria, and specimens featuring calcite, fluorite or epidote. These specimens illustrate the diversity of crystal formations and mineral associations found in natural quartz.

Our selection changes as specimens are sold and new pieces are added. Some specimens mentioned in this description may therefore no longer be available.
