Pink Manganocalcite: Crystallisation and Characteristics

Manganocalcite is a manganese-bearing variety of calcite, generally recognised by its pink colours, ranging from very pale pink to deeper shades. It belongs to the trigonal crystal system and retains the main characteristics of calcite, including a hardness of approximately 3 on the Mohs scale. The manganese present in its crystal structure is responsible for its distinctive colour.

Manganocalcite may occur as rhombohedral crystals, crystal groups or more massive formations. Its colour varies depending on the manganese content and the conditions under which the mineral formed. Some specimens display a uniform pink colour, while others show variations in shade or lighter areas.

Manganocalcite from Bulgaria: Zlatograd and Madan

Located in the Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, the mining areas of Madan and Zlatograd are known for their lead and zinc deposits. The Madan district has a long mining history and contains numerous polymetallic deposits. Mining activities have also revealed various carbonate minerals, including manganocalcite.

Manganese-bearing calcite is also known from the Zlatograd area. These two mining regions are therefore of particular interest to mineral collectors, both for their geological history and for the minerals discovered there.
