Calcite
Calcite: a remarkable variety of crystal formations
Calcite is a mineral composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), valued by collectors for its wide variety of shapes and colours. Its crystals can be rhombohedral, scalenohedral — the famous "dogtooth" crystals — or form twins. Some calcite crystals occur individually, while others grow on a matrix or alongside minerals such as fluorite, quartz and amethyst.
