Azurite: color, crystallization and identification

Azurite belongs to the carbonate mineral group. Its chemical formula is Cu₃(CO₃)₂(OH)₂, making it a basic copper carbonate that forms mainly in the oxidation zones of copper deposits.

It is easily recognized by its characteristic blue color, which may range from strong blue to very deep blue. The intensity of the color can vary according to crystal thickness, development and growth conditions.

Azurite crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system. It may occur as well-defined prismatic or tabular crystals, crystal groups, aggregates or surfaces covered with fine microcrystals. Its luster is generally vitreous.

Azurite and malachite: a frequent association

Azurite and malachite are frequently found together. Both are secondary copper carbonate minerals and may form within the same oxidation zones of copper deposits.

Malachite is distinguished by its green coloration, creating a natural contrast with the blue of azurite. Some specimens show only small areas of malachite, while others display a clearly visible association of the two minerals.

Azurite can also gradually alter into malachite under certain conditions. This mineralogical relationship explains why azurite and malachite are so frequently found together on the same specimen.

Localities of the azurite specimens
