Chrysocolla

A copper mineral with varied forms

Chrysocolla is a hydrated copper-bearing mineral that forms in the oxidised zones of copper deposits. It usually occurs as masses, coatings or aggregates rather than as clearly defined individual crystals. Its colour ranges from pale blue to blue-green, sometimes with green, brown or darker areas related to the matrix and associated minerals.

In the specimens presented here, chrysocolla may occur with malachite or develop against a quartzitic matrix. These associations create contrasts between blue and green areas and the lighter or darker parts of the supporting matrix. Some chrysocolla specimens also have a more compact appearance due to silicification.

Choosing chrysocolla for a mineral collection

When comparing chrysocolla specimens, useful points to examine include the distribution of colour, the visibility of the blue-green areas, the surface relief and the contrast with the matrix. A specimen may also be of interest because of a clearly visible association with malachite, its overall shape or the balance between the chrysocolla and its supporting matrix.

Uniform colour is not the only factor to consider. Transitions between blue and green, the presence of malachite, the texture and the structure of the piece can all contribute to its interest as a collector mineral. The photos and videos help assess these differences, along with the size, volume and presentation of each chrysocolla specimen.
