Specimen Description
This fluorite from Jalingo, Nigeria, features an attractive cluster of intergrown cubic crystals, with colours ranging from bluish green to deeper green. Several crystals display darker central zones, contrasting with the translucent areas near their edges.
The crystal formation is particularly interesting due to the arrangement of cubes oriented in different directions. Some display well-defined flat faces, while others show growth patterns and fine surface irregularities.
Chemical Composition and Mineralogical Properties
Fluorite is a mineral composed of calcium fluoride, with the chemical formula CaF₂. It belongs to the halide mineral group and crystallises in the cubic crystal system, as illustrated by the crystals of this Jalingo specimen.
Its hardness is 4 on the Mohs scale, making it a relatively soft mineral that is susceptible to scratching. Fluorite also exhibits perfect cleavage in four directions, an important characteristic for its identification.
The green coloration of fluorite may result from defects in its crystal structure and the presence of certain elements in trace amounts. The intensity and distribution of this coloration vary between crystals.
